A BRIEF HOGS HISTORY
In 1983 and 1984, the Los Angeles Police Revolver and Athletic Club
hosted a foot race across the desert and invited the
Santa Ana Police Department to participate as an invited guest. This foot race later became known as the
Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay.

TEAM ONE CAPTAIN
Corporal Jim Rose has run for the Santa Ana Police Running team since 2001 and has been the Team Captain since 2003.
HEAD COACH
Mellie Clark has been the backbone of the Santa Ana Police Running Team since its inception in 1983 and has been an integral part of the team's development and success. Mellie develops and implements workout programs for the team and continues to compete regularly in the Police and Fire games.
TEAM ONE CO-CAPTAIN
Corporal Joe Weber has run for the Santa Ana Police Running team since 2004 and assumed the role of Team Co-Captain after the 2009 race.
TEAM TWO CAPTAIN
Detective Jessica Quintana has run for Team Two since 2006, was Co-Captain in 2007 and became Team Captain in 2008. Prior to joining the running team, she was a member of the volunteer support crew.
TEAM TWO CO-CAPTAIN
Sergeant Mike Buelna is a Team Two Co-Captain. He has competed as a runner in 2006 and as a volunteer leg captain in 2008. Mike's administrative experience in both the private and public sectors are an asset to the team.

Corporal Chuck Elms is also a Team Two Co-Captain and has participated in the Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay as both runner and volunteer support crew for Team Two.

In 1983 and 1984, the Los Angeles Police Revolver and Athletic Club
hosted a foot race across the desert and invited the
Santa Ana Police Department to participate as an invited guest. This foot race later became known as the
Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay.
The Santa Ana Police Running Team, has dominated the 1000 division (Department with 300-1000 officers) of the Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay since entering the division in 2005. In order to make the team, each runner competes in a 10K run (6.2 miles) to qualify and only the top 24 qualifying 10K times are selected (20 runners and 4 alternates) for the race. In 2006, a second team was added to meet the growing interest in participation.
The teams would not be as successful without a dedicated volunteer support crew which consists of follow-van drivers, timers, stage captains, stage catchers, transport personnel and a sworn volunteer to assist the race director.

Jim Rose has been the SAPD Hogs team captain since 2003, following long time team captain Mellie Clark who held the position for 20 years. Mellie continues to serve as the Hogs Head Coach.>>
